Born in Guildford, Mary Branson is a graduate of Surrey Institute of Art and Design, and Kingston University where completed her M.A.in ‘Art and Space’. Her recent work is concerned with examining the rituals that exist within different sections of society, be they social, religious or ceremonial.
Her light installations explore the sense of illusion and seduction through which we are drawn to the possibilities of lives outside our everyday experience.
By using bold imagery and unconventional scale, she is attempting to challenge the traditional notions of the gallery space, and question the role of public art – should it be an aesthetic exercise or an outlet for social comment?
